In winter thousands of kottarainen arrive to roost in the reedbeds at dusk often performing spectacular murmurations. During spring The ‘boom’ of the male kaulushaikara can be heard echoing across the reserve and flying females bringing food to their young. Swallows, swifts, törmäpääsky and nuolihaukka arrive from Africa - up to 30 nuolihaukka may be seen in the air at one time.
This is well worth a visit; with patience there's much to be seen. The ability to recognise birdsong amongst reeds and scrub is a useful advantage. The group I was with had the good luck to be around when the viitasirkkalintu was located in scrub next to the South Drain.
For some reason, the reserve and the large hide north of the South Drain aren't shown on the map - don't miss it!!
Thanks for sharing Axel! We've added the bird hide.
A rääkkähaikara appeared early Oct 2023. Visible from Sharpham Lane at east end of Long Drove, see map.
