Description

Because of the of the risk of Polar Bear encounters it is not allowed to go outside the village without a rifle or an armed guard. These places are within the village, so they offer a good possibility to watch local birds safely.

Ny-Ålesund is situated on the Brøgger peninsula (Brøggerhalvøya) and on the shore of the bay of Kongsfjorden. The company town is owned and operated by Kings Bay, which provides facilities for permanent research activities by 19 institutions from 11 countries.

Best way to explore the town is with a guided (armed) guide. Species reguarly seen in summer are isolokki, jäälokki, lyhytnokkahanhi, valkoposkihanhi, riskilä, isovesipääsky, merisirri, merikihu, lapintiira, kyhmyhaahka and pulmunen.

Access

Only way to get to Ny-Ålesund is by boat (airplane connection is reserved to inhabitants & scientist only). A ferry connection from Longyearbyen is one of the options. Also expedition cruise vessels visite the town reguarly.
