Description
Reserva Natural de los Sotos de Alfaro is a nature reserve where fragments of the old riverside forests are still preserved. The riverbed wanders freely here creating meanders, islands and beaches. Among all the species that inhabit this wetland, the kattohaikara stands out, sometimes you can see hundreds of them. Other birds you can encounter are metsäviklo, pitkäjalka, taivaanvuohi, etelänharmaalokki, ruskohaikara, silkkihaikara, kapustahaikara, ruskosuohaukka, etelänsatakieli, pensassirkku, virtavästäräkki, mehiläissyöjä and Kuhankeittäjä. Espagnol: Las riberas del tramo medio del Ebro en la Rioja Baja albergan la Reserva Natural de los Sotos de Alfaro, un singular ecosistema de bosques y aves a orillas del río. Piérdete por ellos, descansa entre las sombras de sus diversos árboles, observa sus pájaros. El cauce del río divaga aquí de manera única creando y destruyendo meandros, islas y playas. De los sotos inundados nace un vergel único de chopos, álamos, sauces, fresnos y alisos donde podrás observar cigüeñas, garzas, cormoranes, mirlos, milanos, abubillas y martines pescadores, entre otros.

In the village of Alfaro is a visitor center (Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva Natural de los Sotos de Alfaro, Pza. de España, 1, free entrance) with more info on the area. You can also go directly to the viewpoint on the Ebro and overlook the area from there and explore the surrounding river banks. Or you can make a 6 km circular walk (see the map) along the Ebro and through patches of forest and cultivated fields. Click on the P in the map to get directions to a parkingplace near the viewpoint.
