Description

Estuario Ria San Martín is an estuary located on the central coast of Cantabria. The estuary is formed by the mouth of the Saja and Besaya rivers. It has an area of 389 hectares of which a large area is intertidal. The area is good for birding all year round but most interesting for birdwatchers in the period of autumn migration between mid-August and mid-October. Among the birds you can see un the area are mustatiira, pikkutiira, merimetso, kapustahaikara, ristisorsa, kuovi, pikkukuovi, suokukko, rantasipi, valkoviklo, silkkihaikara, lehmähaikara and sääksi (kalasääski).

Access

Leave the car in the port of Suances and walk along the greenway that runs along the estuary. The Senda de La Ribera, also used by cyclists runs for many miles next to the banks of the Ria de San Martín and the Saja River.
