The Hrhov fishponds were created in the 1960s on the site of a large marsh. Today the ponds are an important area for birds in Slovakia.
Hrhovské Rybníky is located in the valley between two karst plateaus and is fed by the local river. The area consists of a large pond and a smaller pond next to each other and several smaller ponds at the back of the area. At the edges of the ponds there are old poplars, reed beds and a wide strip of bushes. On both sides of the large pond there is a bird watching platform. The trees are home to a colony of harmaahaikara with 20-40 pairs. Other birds that breed here include silkkiuikku, ruskosuohaukka and merikotka.
Hrhovské Rybníky is located about 40 km south-west of the city of Košice, in the valley of the Turna river. By direct bus you can reach Hrhov from Kosice in about 45 minutes. The bus stop "Št. Rybárstvo" is located at the entrance to the area. From there you can explore the area on foot and almost immediately you will come to the first viewing platform. By car you can park in the same place, or on the lawn across the large pond at the other viewing platform. In both places there is limited parking space for about 2-3 cars. Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot.
The circular walking route shown on the map is bout 8,5 km.
