The pebbly lower flow of the Drina River hides some real birding gems.
The star species of the Drina River near Badovinci is pikkutiira.
pikkutiira can be found from May to August along most of the pebbly 30km long lower flow of the Drina River, from the confluence of the Drina into the Sava River to the confluence of the Jadar tributary into the Drina. Breeding of pikkutiira has been confirmed in this area too. However, access is mostly difficult due to many gravel pits scattered around the river banks and old meanders. Luckily, the bank of Drina around Pavlović Bridge near Badovinci is easily accessed featuring even a small river quay, from which birds flying upstream or downstream can be easily spotted.
From Badovinci go west towards Pavlović Bridge and Bijeljina. However, on the first bend to the left, continue straight, and after 150m turn left to a gravel road leading to many gravel pits. After 1 km you will reach the river bank with the spacious parking place and a small quay. Here just wait and pikkutiira will come either from the upstream or downstream side.
There are many gravel pits along the lower flow of the Drina River and pikkutiira can be found near most of them. One of the best other places to visit is the Crna Bara gravel pit near the village of the same name.
