Description
The Vala da Azambuja crosses the Ribatejo floodplains, a vast area of agricultural fields and wetlands that attract a great diversity of birds. The presence of water throughout the year makes this a strategic site for the feeding and resting of aquatic, migratory, and resident birds.
Here, you can observe harmaahaikara, kapustahaikara, pronssi-iibis, and flamingo, as well as ducks and waders such as avosetti and pitkäjalka. It is also an excellent location to spot birds of prey, including ruskosuohaukka and niittysuohaukka, which patrol the fields in search of prey. The open landscape and canal system provide ideal conditions for birdwatching and photography.

Access
The Vala da Azambuja is accessible by road from the EN3-3, near the bridge that crosses the canal. There are no signs from the road. Parking is on a dirt surface near the starting point of the trail. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From the parking it is a 3 km trail one way and 3 km back.
From the Azambuja Train Station, there is a possible route that can be done on foot or by bicycle, with a round trip totaling approximately 13 km.
