The wide lagoon area around the village of Murtosa is great for observing birds like sääksi (kalasääski), flamingo, kapustahaikara and ruskosuohaukka.
To the north of Aveiro is the Murtosa area, which forms a small peninsula in the interior of the estuary. The lagoon area surrounding Murtosa has a large number of routes and trails which you can travel by foot or by bike. Among the birds you can observe are töyhtöhyyppä, harjalintu, kuningaskalastaja, liitohaukka, tundrakurmitsa, rantasipi, merimetso, kattohaikara, harmaahaikara, sääksi (kalasääski), flamingo, kapustahaikara, mustapyrstökuiri and ruskosuohaukka.
Get the highway A1 and exit in Murtosa. The best way to explore the region is by bike or by boat. Click on a P in the map to get directions to that parking. It is possible to walk along the edge of this peninsula from the marina of Cais do Bico, heading northwest towards the bridge of Ponte da Varela. This route offers good views of the lagoon and, during low tide, it is possible to observe many waterbirds. A 24 km circular route is also possible (see the map) but because of the length best done by bike.
