Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like etelänharmaalokki, selkälokki and naurulokki. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like pikkukuovi, karikukko, pulmussirri and rantasipi.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly kalatiira and ruusutiira, but sometimes also riuttatiira.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of keltanokkaliitäjä can be observed. Small numbers of tyrskyliitäjä can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like pikkuliitäjä and kanariankääpiöliitäjä.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like rengasnokkalokki, grönlanninlokki and, in 2011, a kruunuyöhaikara.
