Beautiful and well preserved fortress town that is surrounded by greenery and a canal that also houses birds.
The star-shaped old town of Fredrikstad is the best-preserved fortress town in Northern Europe. Worth a visit because of the many galleries, artisans, shops, restaurants, and cafes. But also for birding, because a wooded green belt runs around the old town, including the canal that surrounds the fortress. That means plenty of habitats and plenty of birds to see. The star-shaped defence walls around the town are perfect for walking and easy birding.
Easy to access from Fredrikstad and also possibilities for parking close to the old town. See the map.
