Sheltered forest lake, accessed by an easy grassland footpath, with a stunning view of Aoraki, which reflects in the lake.
Lake Matheson is famous among photographers for (on a calm, cloudless day) its perfect mirror reflection of Aoraki (Mt. Cook). There is a gentle track which circuits this small lake, and it weaves between forest and reeds. Between carpark and circuit track there is a footpath which goes through a small grassland, making this an excellent place to listen for (and sometimes see) New Zealand Fernbird . Other birds are abundant, and there are often eels in the shallow, tannin-filled stream which the path crosses on a footbridge. I do not think it is wheelchair-accessible, but the path is otherwise accessible even for those with limited fitness.
Follow signage west out of Fox Glacier toward Lake Matheson (along Cook Flat Rd on to Lake Mathesen Rd). The route is clearly signposted, and there is a caf and visitor centre by a designated carpark. The road is well-maintained and accessible for all cars.
From the carpark it is best to proceed by foot (I am not sure if it is the only permitted method). Walk slowly and admire all of the bird life around!
