Old border marsh located on the Belgian and Dutch border. The Wijffelterbroek is part of the Kempen-Broek Cross-Border Park.
The Wijffelterbroek, together with the Smeetshof nature reserve in Belgium (also described on Birdingplaces), is one large cross-border nature reserve. In recent years, the old border marsh has been restored, rehydrated and connected. The marsh area is surrounded by wet meadows. In this way, the species-rich grazed and wet nature was restored. Because the area has become much more humid again, many birds have returned. Breeding birds include turturikyyhky, Kuhankeittäjä, nuolihaukka, kuningaskalastaja, lehtokerttu, luhtakerttunen, pensassirkkalintu, pajusirkku and rytikerttunen.

The Wijffelterbroek is located on the border between the towns of Altweerterheide and Bocholt. Parking is available at Parking 5 Nieuw Vosseven (Lochtstraat 28) in Stramproy. Click on the P in the map for directions. The Wijffelterbroek is easily accessible via a network of roads and hiking trails. In a number of areas it is indicated at the entrance that they are freely accessible. Keep a distance of at least 25 meters from the large grazers in the nature reserves. When it is very wet, some trails may be impassable or closed. The walking route indicated on the map is approximately 7 km.
In any case, wear good waterproof shoes and in very wet periods, boots are recommended. And make sure you always have mosquito repellent on hand.
