Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly ruskosuohaukka but also arosuohaukka (early-mid spring) and niittysuohaukka (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for pikkutuulihaukka and punajalkahaukka (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, mehiläissyöjä and sininärhi. lyhytvarvaskiuru arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including ruostepääsky, and pipits, including lapinkirvinen. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see kapustarinta and töyhtöhyyppä. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
