One of the most beautiful pond landscapes in Germany that is part of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschafte.
North of the Saxon town of Bautzen, the largest contiguous pond landscape in Central Europe extends over 301 km². In the Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschafte, which was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1996. The more than 350 bodies of water within the biosphere reserve are spread over 39 pond groups. One of the most beautiful are the Guttauer Teiche, about 11 km north of the A4 exit "Bautzen Ost" and easy to reach from Dresden under an hour's drive. The 13 small ponds are rich in birds and can be explored by a nature trail. Among the birds you can see are telkkä, punasotka, pikku-uikku, kaulushaikara, isohaarahaukka, haarahaukka, merikotka, ruskosuohaukka, käki, rastaskerttunen, rytikerttunen, kalatiira and Kurki.
You can enter a 2,6 km circular educational trail (Naturerlebnispfad) from the Visitor Centre of the Biosphere Reserve in Wartha. You can also choose the longer walk of 7 km that is indicated on the map below. Click on a P in the map to get directions to the parking place of your choice.
