The floodplain landscape of Hohenrode with several ponds is near the Weser and is 115 hectares in size. A great place for birding.
In Auenlandschaft Hohenrode a pair of merikotka can be observed all year round. The pair breeds in the vicinity. From May, several pairs of kalatiira come to the nature reserve to breed on the artificial nesting rafts. Many different types of geese and ducks as well as waders can be observed. An observation hut and a tower invite you to observe the bird life up close without disturbing. If you are lucky, you can see kuningaskalastaja, törmäpääsky and isokoskelo.
The Weserradweg (cycle path) leads directly past the Hohenrode floodplain landscape. A gravel parking lot for parking cars is also available. The best way to explore the nature reserve is on foot. The observation hut is in the immediate vicinity of the parking lot. Here you can take a look at a gravel island on which many species of birds rest. A branch path leads to the lookout tower, from there you can see the bird island with an artificially constructed sääksi (kalasääski) nest. A circular route can also be walked.
