Pointe de la Coubre is a 5km stable sandspit at the end of the Coubre forest. Pines/tamarisks are scattered in the dunes around a saltmarsh and a reedbed.
Pointe de la Coubre becomes very interesting during spring and autumn migration, just before or after birds cross the Gironde. Migrating species include sääksi (kalasääski), ruskosuohaukka, räyskä, sepelrastas, kirjosieppo.
Breeding species include sinirinta, Töyhtökiuru, nummikirvinen, heinäkerttu, hemppo, vuoriuunilintu. On the ocean side of the beach breeds mustajalkatylli which nests are fenced and protected every year.
Wintering species include mustalintu, isokihu and all sorts of waders and ducks (isosirri, tylli, kuovi, mustapyrstökuiri, tundrakurmitsa).
How to get there: By bike - bike trails from Rochefort (60km) and Royan (20km). Follow "Phare de la Coubre". By car - Follow "Phare de la Coubre" to get to the car park. Free car park but closed at night.
How to visit: on foot only, free access. From the car park, go south and follow the dunes. You can go to the very end of the sandpit that faces La Palmyre across the strait (5km one way, 10km round trip by foot).
