Description
The Seudre estuary is home to a large portion of the population of the nanmetum subspecies of the sinirinta, which is endemic to the French Atlantic coast. With a bit of luck it can be observed here (other good spots are the Pointe de la Coubre, Marais de Brouage and RNMO). Some breeding birds of the Moulin des Loges reserve are keltavästäräkki, silkkikerttunen, haarapääsky, pitkäjalka and more.
Nearby kapustahaikara and different heron species, such as yöhaikara are breeding, as well as kalatiira and liitohaukka. Besides from that you can observe heinätavi and several limicole species during migration, such as suokukko, mustapyrstökuiri (keep your eyes open for the islandica subspecies), pikkusirri etc. (see the list below). The open landscape also allows good observations of migrating passerines, like pensastasku, kirjosieppo, leppälintu or kivitasku, as well as käenpiika. On the nearby fields you can observe punapyy, kapustarinta (only during winter), töyhtöhyyppä and harmaasirkku. Note that in end of August the hunt for waders and ducks begins, which makes good observations harder.
In the summer 2025 a palsasirri and a lampiviklo were stationary on the side of the road for a while. I was also able to observe a silkkihaikara x riuttahaikara hybrid several times in the area.
