The salt marshes of Guérande are salt works that date back to Roman times. The greatly differing salinity levels attract many birds.
The marshes of Marais salants de Guérande are divided into a mosaic of pans separated by clay mudwalls fed with water by channels. The salt works date back to Roman times. The greatly differing salinity levels, gives rise to rich algae and invertebrate communities which in turn support the numerous birds species present. The site is important for numerous species of nesting, feeding, resting and wintering migratory birds and waders. You can observe birds like avosetti, pitkäjalka, kalatiira, kapustahaikara and mustapyrstökuiri and many other water birds and waders. See the birdlist below.

Labellisés "Site remarquable du Goût", les 2 000 hectares de marais sont alimentés par les traicts du Croisic et de Mesquer. Protégés pour leur patrimoine écologique, ils se découvrent notamment avec 3 structures : Terre de Sel et la Maison des Paludiers à Guérande et le Musée des Marais Salants de Batz-sur-Mer. De même, des paludiers indépendants ou associations vous proposent de nombreuses prestations.
The route (6 km one way) you see on the map below meanders between the salt lakes and marshes. For parking click on the P in the map to get directions. Best option is to do the route on bicycle.
