Beautiful lake, where 256 bird species have been seen. On the north side of the lake a boardwalk leads through the reeds and marshes.
Vransko Jezero National Nature Park is famous for its birds. Lake Vransko reserve is on the list of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBA) in Europe. It is the largest natural lake in Croatia and one of the best wetlands in this part of the country for birds and birders. A great variety of birds have been recorded here – 256 species at the last count. Some are migratory, others, such as ruskohaikara and pikkumerimetso, actually nest here, along with 100 other species of birds. It is a nice lake for birding, with a lot of birds. Other birds you can see here are ruskosuohaukka, mustapääsirkku, pääskykahlaaja, kuningaskalastaja, silkkihaikara, jalohaikara, rääkkähaikara, lehmähaikara, kaulushaikara, merimetso. The lake is at its best in spring (April & May) and in autumn (September & October). Depending on the water level also a good number of waders can be observed.
The most easy accessible part of the lake is the 600 meter long boardwalk next to the Info Center Crkvine on the north side of the lake. It has plenty of viewpoints and several low bird observations towers. Entrance fee is € 5 pp (2024). But don't forget to check the canals, small-scale agricultural plots and meadows in the surrounding fields, between the Crkvine boardwalk and the village of Vrana to the north, where often many other interesting birds can be spotted.
The boardwalk trail at Lake Vransko is easy accessible by car and has a parking. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking. Besides the boardwalk, it is interesting to explore the area north of it. This is also part of the ornithological reserve. Note that not all paths are accessible. Please respect the signs and do not enter the areas that are not accessible to visitors. Having said that, the protected area between the Crkvine boardwalk and the village of Vrana has plenty of unpaved paths and rural roads that you are allowed to explore on foot and that lead to interesting wet meadows and small-scale agricultural fields.
