Description
Bichterweerd is a nature reserve with a gravel lake that has been turned into nature. It is now an important stopping place for waders like valkoviklo, punajalkaviklo, suokukko, suosirri, liro and a wintering spot for many species of duck and geese. Other birds that can be observed are kiuru, sääksi (kalasääski), kapustahaikara, kalatiira, turturikyyhky, ruskosuohaukka and keltavästäräkki. Adjacent is a floodplain area, known as Maasweerden. This consists of grassland that is regularly flooded by the river Maas. Birds such as törmäpääsky and keltasirkku are important here. The gravel lake is not accessible, but can be overlooked from the Maasdijk.

Nederlands: Bichterweerd is een natuurgebied dat onderdeel is van het Rivierpark Maasvallei. Centraal in het gebied ligt een grindplas die na ontgrinding werd ingericht voor de natuur. Het is nu een belangrijke pleisterplaats is voor tal van steltlopers als valkoviklo, punajalkaviklo, suokukko, suosirri en liro. Het gebied is ook een overwinteringsplaats voor vele soorten eenden en ganzen. Andere vogels die kunnen worden waargenomen zijn:. kiuru, sääksi (kalasääski), kapustahaikara, kalatiira, turturikyyhky, ruskosuohaukka en keltavästäräkki. Aansluitend ligt een uiterwaardengebied, bekend als Maasweerden en beheerd door Natuurpunt. Dit bestaat uit grasland dat regelmatig door de Maas wordt overstroomd. Van belang zijn hier de vogels als törmäpääsky en keltasirkku. Het gebied is niet toegankelijk, maar kan van de Maasdijk worden overzien.

Access
There are no signposted walking routes through the area. The winter dike that runs along the area is paved and you can walk and cycle there. From the dike you have an excellent view of the area. Parking is possible in the villages around the area, for example in Boyen (see the P on the map).

Nederlands: Er zijn geen bewegwijzerde wandelroutes door het gebied. De winterdijk die langs het gebied loopt is verhard en je kan er wandelen en fietsen. Vanaf de dijk heb je een uitstekend zicht op de waterplas. Parkeren kan in de dorpjes rondom het gebied, bijvoorbeeld in Boyen (zie de P op de kaart).
