Description

Blackbutt Reserve is an undulating natural environment of 182 hectares consisting of a diverse range of habitats and ecosystems. It offers a blend of bushland, walking trails, picnic areas, and wildlife exhibits. The reserve is home to koalas, wombats, kangaroos and wallabies. It a popular destination for families, but the reserve is set within 182 hectares of natural bushland, with walking trails, making it feel more like a wild sanctuary. Entry to the reserve is free.

Blackbutt Reserve features several kilometres of walking tracks through woodlands and rainforest, as well as several picnic areas – many with small lakes. In a 2 hour visit you can observe 40-50 different birds including nice birds like Powerful Owl, Grey Goshawk, Pacific Baza, Regent Bowerbird, Satin Bowerbird, Noisy Pitta, Bassian Thrush, Australian Brushturkey and Australian King-Parrot.

Access

Blackbutt Reserve is located six kilometres from Newcastle city centre, between the suburbs of New Lambton and Kotara. The north and west of the reserve is on Lookout Road and the south is on Carnley Avenue. Car parking is available via entrances off Carnley Ave, Mahogany Drive, Freyberg St and Lookout Road (the gate here is not always open). Press a P on the map for directions to a parking.

Entry to the reserve is free. The walking trails are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The circular walk of 4 km shown on the map is just a suggestion, there are many other trails to explore.
