On the beach of Fort Island Beach Park you can observe shorebirds such as Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone, Brown Pelican, Royal Tern, Laughing Gull, Western Sandpiper, and Black Skimmer. On the drive to the beach through the extensive marshland one can see Great Egret, Osprey and various other water birds.

Fort Island Beach Park is located on the Gulf of Mexico, 9 miles (15 km) west of the city of Crystal River. Road 44 branches off towards the sea on the southern edge of Crystal River. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates.

The large parking lot at Fort Island Beach can be full on weekends. There are barbecue areas, covered picnic tables, toilets and an outdoor shower. There is a public boat ramp next door. The pier is no longer accessible due to damage caused by Hurricane Idalia in August 2023.
