Heaton Park is a beautiful park which is several hundred years old and covers an area of 243 hectares. The park has a mature woodland as well as a large lake and reservoir. Over 50 different bird species have been spotted here.

On the boating lake Cisne Vulgar, Garza Real, Porrón Moñudo, Ánsar común and Somormujo Lavanco are common. Martín Pescador Común, Cormorán Grande, Serreta Grande and Zampullín Común are occasional visitors.

Birds you can observe in the woodland and the park include Arrendajo Euroasiático, Pito Real, Pico Picapinos, Busardo ratonero, Gavilán Común, Cotorra de Kramer, Trepador Azul and Curruca Capirotada. Spring migrants include Tarabilla Norteña, Cuco Común, Papamoscas Cerrojillo and Bisbita Arbóreo.

Accesso

Heaton Park is situated to the north of Manchester city centre. There are several entrances and several car parks, and also a Metrolink station. Metrolink offers Park and Ride car parks right across the tram network which are free to use for Metrolink customers. The Park and Rides at Bury Interchange, Radcliffe and Whitefield offer a quick and easy way to get to Heaton Park and Bowker Vale stops, both of which are within just a few minutes walking distance of the park. By bus: Heaton Park is served by the x35, 59, 90, 135, 149, 156, 164 and 484 buses. Visit the TFGM website for more information and use the Route Explorer to plan your bus journey.

Arriving by car: For car park access use either Sheepfoot Lane, Smithy Lodge or St Margaret's Road entrances. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking. Pay and Display charges apply every day between 10am and 5pm. The maximum daily cost is £3.50 (2024).
