It is a breeding place for Garza Real that can be observed from the path, and a habitat for waterfowl and for birds living in extensively used meadows. It is also a spawning ground for numerous amphibian species. Bird species that can be observed here include Garza Real, Carricerín Común, Gorrión Molinero, Colirrojo Real , Focha Común, Ánade azulón, Avión Común, Golondrina Común, Vencejo Común, Gavilán Común, Cernícalo vulgar, Busardo ratonero, Jilguero Lúgano, Pico Picapinos, Herrerillo Común, Mito Común, Carbonero Común, Petirrojo Europeo, Pinzón Vulgar, Mirlo Común, Estornino Pinto, Corneja Negra, Pato Mandarín, Serreta Grande, Tórtola Turca, Paloma Torcaz, and Cigüeña Blanca.

There is a public car park next to the lake. However, travelling by bus number 912 from Zürich Bellevue or bus number 919 from the Küsnacht train station (both to the bus station Itschnach-Tägermoos) is recommended. You can also reach Schübelweiher on different walkways leading there from Küsnacht train station in ca. 40 minutes.

From February, Garza Real breed on an island. This allows fascinating observations of the feeding and the progress of the young birds from the walking path. Occasionally a Cigüeña Blanca may be looking for a bite in one of the meadows next to the lake.
