From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Abejero Europeo are possible. With a bit of luck, Cigüeña Negra will also pass by. Other regular species are: Busardo ratonero, Gavilán Común, Azor Común, Cernícalo vulgar, Alcotán Europeo, Milano Real, Milano Negro, Águila Pescadora, Aguilucho Cenizo, Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental and Cigüeña Blanca. In later autumn large flocks of Paloma Torcaz pass by. From time to time Vencejo Real can be observed on food flights.

The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
