Stegeborg lies in the middle of the long bay of Slätbaken. In and around Stegeborg ca 180 bird species have been recorded. The strait at Stegeborg is ice-free almost all winters, if the temperture is not too cold the deeper parts around Stegeborg are also open. Large amounts of Porrón Moñudo, Porrón Osculado, Serreta Grande, Ánade azulón and Focha Común winter in the aera. Numbering in the hundreds sometimes in the thousands. Along with these smaller amounts of less common wintering birds like Serreta Chica, Porrón Bastardo, Ánade friso, Cerceta Común, Somormujo Lavanco, Porrón Europeo, Cormorán Grande, Garza Real, Cisne Cantor, Ánsar común and Barnacla canadiense grande. The area is home to wintering gulls. Many Pigargo Europeo also winter here. As do passerine birds like Alcaudón Norteño, Zorzal Charlo, Zorzal Real, and Petirrojo Europeo.
During spring migration many dabbling ducks (Cerceta Común, Silbón Europeo, Ánade friso, and Ánade rabudo norteño), swans and geese can be found. Most common among geese are Ánsar común and Barnacla canadiense grande. Often in the hundreds. Often a few Ánsar careto, Ánsar Campestre, and Ánsar Campestre de la Tundra. In the reedbeds Carricerín Común, Escribano Palustre, and Carricero Común breed. While Carricero Tordal and Carricero Políglota are sometimes heard. Barnacla Cariblanca, Cormorán Grande, Somormujo Lavanco and Ánade friso breed. Gaviota sombría and Abejero Europeo can sometimes be seen. During autumn large flocks of diving ducks, and some passerine birds can often be found.
