At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Porrón Bastardo but Negrón especulado, Negrón común, Éider común and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Silbón Europeo, Cuchara Común Cerceta Común, Tarro Blanco and Ánade friso also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Somormujo Lavanco, Somormujo Cuellirrojo, and Zampullín Cuellirrojo.Barnacla Cariblanca also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Agachadiza Chica is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Aguilucho pálido, Busardo ratonero, Pigargo Europeo, and Águila Real.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Correlimos Común which sometimes number in the thousands. Aguja Colinegra, Agachadiza común, Ostrero Euroasiático, Zarapito Real, Archibebe Común, Correlimos Común, Avoceta Común, and Chorlitejo Grande all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Vuelvepiedras Común, Chorlito Gris, Aguja Colipinta, Correlimos Tridáctilo, Correlimos de Temminck, and Correlimos Menudo. Rarer wading birds like Correlimos Falcinelo, Falaropo Picofino, Agachadiza Chica and Agachadiza Real are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Ánade friso, Cuchara Común, Cerceta Carretona and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Colimbo Chico and Colimbo Ártico often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Barnacla Cariblanca and Ánsar común can sometimes be found in the thousands. Ánsar piquicorto and Barnacla cuelliroja has been seen.
