Descripción

The deep waters around Lake Vättern are ice-free most years. This makes it an excellent wintering area for birds. The lake holds large wintering populations of gulls like Gaviota Cana, Gaviota argéntea europea and Gavión Atlántico. This is also one of the best places for the rare Gavión Hiperbóreo, although it is not seen most years. Most gulls winter around Motala. The area also holds wintering waterfowl. Most commonly: Serreta Grande, Cisne Vulgar, Garza Real, Cisne Cantor, Porrón Moñudo and Porrón Osculado. Around Vadstenaviken large amounts (many hundreds) of Ánade azulón winter. Often with other rarer (wintering) dabbling ducks in the mix. The lake also holds wintering populations of Cormorán Grande, Serreta Mediana, Serreta Chica (visitors from Boren) Somormujo Lavanco, Zampullín Común, and during mild winters: Zampullín Cuellirrojo, Negrón especulado, Colimbo Ártico and Pato Havelda. The large fields around Vadstena and Norrsten hold wintering geese, Pardillo Piquigualdo and Escribano Nival. Many birds of prey also winter. Most common are Gavilán Común, and Pigargo Europeo.

During the last weeks of Febuari the first spring birds arrive. Estornino Pinto, Alondra Común, Pinzón Vulgar, and Avefría Europea are usually the first to arrive. Some of the previously mentioned birds might start to winter if the winters continue to be mild. Many geese like Barnacla Cariblanca, Ánsar común, Ánsar Campestre, Ánsar careto Ánsar Campestre de la Tundra and Barnacla canadiense grande are often seen. Most geese congregate around Tycklingen and Norrsten. Sometimes Ánsar piquicorto is also found.

During March most of the geese increase in number. More birds of prey arrive: Busardo Calzado, Cernícalo vulgar, Halcón Peregrino, and Milano Real. In Vadstenaviken large amounts of dabbling ducks often rest. Tarro Blanco (Regular), Gaviota Reidora, Ostrero Euroasiático, and Agachadiza común also arrive during this period. From this period onwards Garceta Grande is sometimes seen.

During April other wader along with Pardillo Común and Bisbita Pratense arrive. During April-May large amounts of passerine birds, wader, gulls, and terns use the lake as a landmark for migration. It starts in the middle of April with thousands of Pinzón Vulgar and Pinzón Real, continuing with thousands of Zarapito Real, with smaller amounts of other waders like Zarapito Trinador, Aguja Colipinta, Combatiente and Archibebe Común. Also large amounts of gulls like Gaviota Reidora and Gaviota Cana. In early May hundreds of terns (Charrán Común, Charrán ártico) pass. Along with rarer birds like Fumarel Común, Gaviota Tridáctila (quite rare) and Gaviota Enana.

During the summer many species of night-active birds can be heard like Buscarla Pintoja, Ruiseñor Ruso, Guión de Codornices, Carricero Tordal (vadstena reningsverk), Codorniz Común and sometimes Buscarla Fluvial. Many other warblers can be found during this period. In the cities of Motala and Vadstena city birds like Tórtola Turca, Verderón Común, Colirrojo Tizón (missing most winters), Pinzón Real, Paloma Bravía, and Curruca Capirotada can be found year round.
