Landsort, also known as Öja, is a small island in the Nynäshamn archipelago and is one of the best places for bird watching in the Stockholm archipelago.
The entire island of Landsort is a nature conservation area and here is Landsort Fågelstation (Landsort's bird station), which documents and rings over 12,000 birds every year. Whether you are an experienced bird watcher or just interested in nature, you are welcome to visit the bird station to learn more about the migration and ringing of Swedish birds.
By car: Drive road 73 south towards Nynäshamn. Turn right towards Nynäshamn Norra, Herrhamra, Torö. After about 200 meters, turn right again towards Herrhamra, Torö. Continue straight to Ankarudden, approximately 15 km from the exit. From there you take the boat to Ankarudden. Check the departure times as the boat usually only leaves three times a day (see the link below).
By public transport: Take the commuter train from Stockholm towards Nynäshamn and get off at Nynäs Gård (approx. 1 hour). Take bus 852 towards Torö and get off at the end station Ankarudden (approx. 30 min). Take the boat out to Landsort (approx. 30 min).
Recommended to take the first boat to Landsort and the last boat from Landsort. The ferry normally docks at the village on the southern part of the island. The bird station is a few hundred meters north of the village, on the east side. From the gravel road that runs from the village up towards Norrhamn, there is a small track that leads up to the station.
It is also possible to book into the hostel, but then you should book it well in advance because it is very popular.
The amount of birds is great. 300 species of birds have been observed and every year many different bird species are ringed. Among the birds you can see are Mosquitero Bilistado, Mosquitero de Pallas, Colirrojo Tizón, Mirlo Capiblanco, Tarabilla Norteña, Torcecuello Euroasiático, Chocha Perdiz, Mirlo Capiblanco, Papamoscas Papirrojo, Papamoscas Acollarado, Curruca Gavilana, Negrón común, Éider de anteojos, Colimbo Ártico, Pigargo Europeo, Bisbita de Richard, Bisbita Costero, Escribano Cerillo and many other species not mentioned here.
