Birdrich area in the southern Tamiš river floodplain, from Jabučki Rit (Apple's Marsh) to the city of Pančevo.
Tamiš embankment is an all-round birding location that is good all seasons. It has different habitats, and hosts many different bird species. One can easily record 30-40 bird species in a couple of hours in almost any time of the year.
Tamiš embankment protects the wider area of old Pančevački Rit (Pančevo Marsh) north of Belgrade from flooding. The embankment is surrounded by so-called "kubici" ("the cubes"), the area along the embankment from which soil is used to build the embankment. As the bottom of the "cubes" is at a lower level than the surrounding area, they are full of water most time of the year, attracting various birds of water and marsh habitats.
The most scenic and productive area is the part of the embankment immediately after the railway bridge, where "the cubes" meet the Tamiš river and are connected with it during high water levels.
Tamiš embankment is easily accessible from the old road Belgrade - Pančevo. If coming from Belgrade, turn left after a small elevation hosting a small "PKB" monument.
Alternatively, if you want to skip the first 1.5 km of the embankment and get straight to the more productive areas, go to the second or third parking point on the map. Click on a P in the map for directions or coordinates.
Note that the barrier is closed and locked: no driving is allowed on the levee, only cycling and walking.
There is a walking path on the railway bridge across the Tamiš River, with fabulous views of Tamiš River and "the cubes". However, be extra careful because the pedestrian path is very narrow and trains are not that rare.
When using a bike, you can extend the route as the Tamiš embankment is productive for birding all the way up to the Sefkerin road, totaling over 21 km.
The observation towers indicated on the map are actually hunting towers and some of them are locked, but one can climb up most of them as they have freely accessible porches.
