Descripción

There's a mixed colony of Garza Real and Martinete Común in the northern part of the site and during breeding season the ponds are teeming with herons and ducks flying about. The northernmost lake is the biggest and the only deep body of water and is the most secluded, being surrounded by hills, pastures and agricultural lands. The small ponds in the middle of the site also have extensive reedbeds and shallow waters and this is where most of the birds come to feed and can be seen often from a close distance.

The two, elongated ponds near the city, are a major attraction for birds during late autumn and winter for swans and ducks, the former gathering here in particularly large numbers. The ponds are drained annually and during migration many waders and other aquatic birds stop by to recharge here. In the winter, Pigargo Europeo can be seen regularly.

Accesso

The Fălticeni Lakes are situated near the city of Fălticeni and are partly accessible. The two southern lakes near Fălticeni can be accessed by the road descending from the city that passes between them. Unfortunately, only the last one has a road that goes along its northern shore. The other lakes from upstream can be accessed by the european road (E85) that links Făltceni to Podeni (this one offers access only to the next three ponds) or by following the paved county road from Fălticeni to Mihăiești (209A) that follows the western side of the lakes. You should find enough places to park your car along the way, only that there are only a few places with a good view over the ponds.

If you want to go all the way to the last lake, before entering Mihăiești town, you have to take the gravel road to the right, that passes through the managed ponds. People working at the ponds might ask about your activity but they normally don't have any problems with birders and should let you be. After leaving the managed ponds toward the last lake, on the west side of it, you will pass by a house and arrive in a pasture where there are some tall trees near the shore. From here, you can follow the dirt road through the pasture for a while until it reaches a gravel road. From here you can either turn back or follow the gravel road to the left until you reach Mihăiești. To reach other parts of the ponds or lakes you have to follow dirt roads between agricultural lands. There might be guard dogs around the managed ponds in the northern half of the site!
