Descripción
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Gaviota Patiamarilla, Gaviota sombría and Gaviota Reidora. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Zarapito Trinador, Vuelvepiedras Común, Correlimos Tridáctilo and Andarríos Chico.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Charrán Común and Charrán Rosado, but sometimes also Charrán Patinegro.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Pardela cenicienta can be observed. Small numbers of Petrel de Bulwer can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Pardela Pichoneta and Pardela de Barolo.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Gaviota de Delaware, Gaviota Groenlandesa and, in 2011, a Martinete Coronado.
