Descripción
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include Cogujada Común, shrikes, Codorniz Común, Escribano Triguero, Alondra Totovía, Curruca Cabecinegra, Curruca Rabilarga and Escribano Soteño. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, Alcatraz Atlántico, Pardela cenicienta, Pardela cenicienta mediterránea and Pardela Balear pass by, and Halcón Peregrino, Vencejo Pálido, Roquero Solitario and Colirrojo Tizón breed on the cliffs. Also Vencejo Real, Águila perdicera and Estornino Negro can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect Halcón de Eleonora, Mirlo Capiblanco, Chorlito Carambolo and Bisbita de Richard.
