Albufeira de Santa Maria de Aguiar is housed in a valley with gentle slopes, where the Aguiar river flows. This reservoir is one of the most important wetlands in the district of Guarda. The scarcity of other wetlands nearby makes this area an important refuge for water birds, especially for Somormujo Lavanco, with this reservoir having one of the most important population centers nationally. Of the water birds also stand out species like Cuchara Común, Ánade azulón, Ánade rabudo norteño, Ánade friso, Cerceta Común, Porrón Europeo, Zampullín Común, Focha Común, Gallineta Común, Cigüeñuela común, Avoceta Común, Garza Imperial, Morito Común and Espátula Común. On the banks of the reservoir and the streams that flow into it, the aquatic and riparian vegetation is occupied by Agachadiza común, Polluela Pintoja, Avetorillo común, Garza Real, Ruiseñor Común, Cetia Ruiseñor, Buscarla Pintoja, Carricero Tordal, Carricero Común,Carricerín Común and Martín Pescador Común.
As regards the surrounding area, the vegetation is dominated by farmland, pastures and small forest areas that allow the presence of landbirds. In the bushes and trees of the east bank it is possible to hear and, with luck, observe species such as Pito Real, Pico Picapinos, Pico Menor, Arrendajo Euroasiático, Oropéndola Europea, Perdiz Roja, Codorniz Común, Curruca Carrasqueña. You can also observe species like Abubilla común, Abejaruco Europeo, Avefría Europea, Alcaudón Común, Alcaudón real, Urraca común, Rabilargo Ibérico and Cogujada Montesina on the banks of this reservoir. You should also prospect the skies, which are often crossed by large birds of prey, such as Águila Pescadora, Elanio Común, Alimoche Común, Abejero Europeo, Black Vulture, Buitre Leonado, Culebrera Europea, Águila calzada, Águila Real, Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental, Aguilucho Cenizo, Gavilán Común, Azor Común, Milano Real, Milano Negro, Halcón Peregrino, Alcotán Europeo, Cernícalo vulgar. In the skies you can also see several species of swallows: Golondrina Común, Golondrina Dáurica, Avión Roquero, Avión Común, Avión Zapador; and swifts: Vencejo Común, Vencejo Real, Vencejo Pálido.
