Descripción

The San is one of the lesser-known rivers of Poland. Yet, it's one of those that haven't been changed and regulated as much as larger and more widely known rivers. It's home to ~30 species of fish (i.e. nase, common barbel, river trout) that provide sufficient diet base for many species of piscivorous birds.

In case of river/water biotope-dependant species, year-round, there can be found many Ánade azulón,, Gaviota Reidora, Gaviota del Caspio, Martín Pescador Común, Garza Real and Garceta Grande. There is a good chance to see some Cisne Vulgar, Cerceta Común, Serreta Grande, Gallineta Común, Focha Común, Chorlitejo Chico, Andarríos Chico, Gaviota Cana, Charrán Común, Pigargo Europeo, Lavandera Blanca, Lavandera Cascadeña and Carricero Políglota during spring and summer.

Some species that can be seen time to time or during migrations are: Ánsar común, Cerceta Carretona, Cuchara Común, Ánade friso, Silbón Europeo, Ánade rabudo norteño, Porrón Europeo, Porrón Pardo, Porrón Moñudo, Porrón Osculado, Zampullín Común, Somormujo Lavanco, Rascón Europeo, Avefría Europea, Correlimos Común, Agachadiza común, Andarríos Grande, Archibebe Claro, Andarríos Bastardo, Archibebe Común, Fumarel Común, Fumarel Cariblanco, Colimbo Chico, Colimbo Ártico, Cigüeña Negra, Cigüeña Blanca, Cormorán Grande, Avetorillo común, Martinete Común, Águila Pescadora, Pájaro-moscón Europeo and others.

It's worth to note wintering water-assiociated species diversity and numbers, especially in case of Serreta Grande, Porrón Osculado and Cisne Vulgar. Winter is also a great time to seek rare or generally uncommon in the area species, such as Porrón Bastardo, Serreta Chica, Serreta Mediana or loons/divers. Often, mixed groups of swans, ducks, grebes and gulls are found. Some predatory species that can be seen during migrations or flying by are: Águila Pescadora, Abejero Europeo, Águila Pomerana, Águila Real, Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental, Aguilucho pálido, Aguilucho Cenizo, Gavilán Común (also local), Azor Común, Milano Negro, Pigargo Europeo (mainly local), Busardo Calzado, Busardo ratonero, Cernícalo vulgar (also local), Cernícalo Patirrojo, Alcotán Europeo and Halcón Peregrino. There are also some local Cárabo Común and Búho Chico.

Banks are covered by trees in general, although quite "loosely". These woods are home to many species of passerines and other birds, such as: Paloma Bravía, Paloma Torcaz, Tórtola Turca, Cuco Común, Pico Mediano, Pico Picapinos, Pico Menor, Pito Cano, Pito Real, Picamaderos Negro, Oropéndola Europea, Arrendajo Euroasiático, Urraca común, Grajilla Occidental, Corneja Cenicienta, Cuervo Grande, Carbonero Garrapinos, Carbonero Palustre, Carbonero Montano, Herrerillo Común, Carbonero Común, Zarcero Icterino, Mosquitero Musical, Mosquitero Común, Mito Común, Curruca Capirotada, Curruca Zarcerilla, Reyezuelo Sencillo, Trepador Azul, Agateador Euroasiático, Agateador Europeo, Chochín Común, Estornino Pinto, Zorzal Común, Mirlo Común, Zorzal Real, Papamoscas Gris, Petirrojo Europeo, Gorrión Común, Gorrión Molinero, Pinzón Vulgar, Picogordo Común, Verderón Común, Jilguero Europeo and Serín Verdecillo.

There are free car parks near supermarkets (Carrefour, Kaufland), near Rural Architecture Museum of Sanok (there's also a paid one - check first) or near MOSIR Sanok. It's adviced to explore banks of San River by foot - although bike is also an option in this case, even better if you want to scan larger portion of river at once. The river isn't accessible by path in some places - try to follow paths, be careful if going farther - sometimes the terrain can be more muddy/there may be a steep bank part.
