Descripción

Known among birders as one of the best places to find northern owls and finches in winter and warblers and other boreal birds in summer. The Sax-Zim Bog is a mix of habitats that attracts a unique array of species not found in other parts of the United States. The area contains black spruce and tamarack bog, upland aspen/maple forests, floodplain forest, sandy upland pine stands, rivers, lakes, farms, meadows, and towns. Great Grey Owl can find here the large tracts of unbroken bog forest they require for nesting.

Other birds that can be observed in the Sax-Zim Bog are bog specialists including Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Canada Jay, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Connecticut Warbler. Also grassland species like LeConte’s Sparrow, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Sedge Wren, Bobolink, and Brewer’s Blackbird during the summer months. In winter Northern Shrike, Rough-legged Hawk, and sometimes Snowy Owl.

Accesso

Located an easy 50-minute drive north west of Duluth, the Sax-Zim Bog is easily accessible by many dirt and paved roads. Birding in the Sax-Zim Bog is done primarily from the roadside (in both winter and summer). To best navigate the Bog, pick up a copy of the Birding Map at the Welcome Center on Owl avenue (the address is 8793 Owl Avenue, Toivola, MN 55765). Click on a P in the map below to get directions or coordinates. You can also download a copy (see the link below). The Birding Map gives suggestions on where to start. A visit to the Welcome Center can help you refine your search and gives a chance to ask questions to staff (in the winter and summer).
