Descripción

Lake Elterwater is a brilliant place to pull in while driving along SH1 between Kaikōura and Te Waiharakeke/Blenheim. Consistent presence of Black Swan, Australian Shoveler, Eurasian Coot, White-faced Heron, New Zealand Scaup, Grey Teal, Great Crested Grebe and often Royal Spoonbill and New Zealand Dabchick.

There is also a semi-resident pair of Hoary-headed Grebe for the past few years, and a chance of seeing Spotless Crake and Baillon's Crake. There is a small dock/observation platform extending into the lake, providing excellent views into the reeds and swampy logs.

This is adjacent to SH1, so most access will be by car or bicycle. It might not be safe to walk to it unless you have plotted a walking path across paddocks in advance. Primary access is along a busy highway.
