Waterberging Twisk (water storage) is 38 hectares in size and can store approximately 100,000 m³ of water in heavy rainfall. As a result, the rest of this part of the surrounding area of West Friesland does not flood. This flooding will take place once every 5 to 10 years. It is a shallow water area with many meadow birds which you can see up close. Remarkably often, special species are also seen. Birds you may encounter in the area are Ánsar común, Somormujo Lavanco, Avoceta Común, Zarapito Real, Cisne Vulgar, Porrón Moñudo, Bigotudo en Gaviota Reidora

Nederlands: Een grote plas waar in het voorjaar vele vogels te zien. Waterberging Twisk is 38 hectare groot en kan bij hevige regenval circa 100.000 m³ water bergen. Daardoor overstroomt de rest van dit deel van West-Friesland niet. Dit volstromen zal één keer in de 5 à 10 jaar plaatsvinden. Waterberging Twisk is niet toegankelijk, maar vanaf het aangrenzende fietspad goed te overzien. Het is een ondiep watergebied met veel weidevogels welke je van behoorlijk dichtbij kan zien. Opvallend vaak worden er ook bijzondere soorten gezien. Vogels die je in het gebied kan tegenkomen zijn Ánsar común, Somormujo Lavanco, Avoceta Común, Zarapito Real, Cisne Vulgar, Porrón Moñudo, Bigotudo en Gaviota Reidora.

Parking is available around the lake. There is a small parking lot along the Noorderweg from where you can walk to the Avión Zapador nesting wall in Oostermare. A little further along the Noorderweg is a larger parking lot. The Marepad also starts from here, which runs along the Twisk water storage. From this cycle path (shown on the map), the Twisk water storage area for walkers and cyclists can be viewed beautifully. You can walk through the area on foot or by bicycle. The cycle path (Marepad) winds along the natural bank of the centuries-old peat stream the Oostermare. From there you have a beautiful view over the water storage.

Nederlands: Rond het meer is er gelegenheid tot parkeren. Er is een klein parkeerplaatsje langs de Noorderweg vanwaar u naar de oeverzwaluwwand in Oostermare kunt wandelen. Even verderop ligt langs de Noorderweg een grotere parkeerplaats. Vanaf hier begint ook het Marepad, dat langs waterberging Twisk loopt. Vanaf dit fietspad (ingetekend op de kaart) is waterberging Twisk voor wandelaars en fietsers prachtig te overzien. Je kan te voet en op de fiets door het gebied.

There is also a bird watching hide in the area (see map) at a shallow pool. A good place for various types of waders and ducks. Zarapito Real, Archibebe Oscuro, Combatiente, Correlimos Común, Agachadiza común, Chorlitejo Chico and Aguja Colinegra are just a few of the species seen here.
