Nature reserve Waalenburg covers almost 500 hectares of meadow bird areas with shallow creeks and marsh areas. The area is very rich in birds all year round and is one of the best bird watching areas on Texel. In the spring the area is good for many species of meadow birds and migrating waders. For example, there are courting Combatiente and breeding Aguja Colinegra in abundance. The Alondra Común can also always be heard. The Avetoro Común also breeds in the area and can be heard from March onwards.
From March onwards the area is very popular for migrating waders such as Combatiente, Correlimos Común, Andarríos Grande, Andarríos Bastardo, Correlimos Menudo, Correlimos de Temminck, etc. In recent years, some rarities have also been seen such as Chorlito Dorado Siberiano, Correlimos Canelo, Archibebe Patigualdo Chico, Correlimos Falcinelo and many others. In late summer through winter large numbers of Agachadiza común and Chorlito Dorado Europeo can be seen and from autumn the area is very popular with various species of geese and ducks.

Nederlands: Vanuit Natuurcentrum De Marel kan je het natuurgebied Waalenburg ontdekken. Waalenburg beslaat bijna 500 hectare weidevogelgebied met ondiepe kreken en moerasdelen. Het gebied is het jaarrond zeer vogelrijk en behoort tot de beste vogelkijkgebieden van Texel. In het voorjaar is het gebied heel geschikt voor vele soorten weidevogels en doortrekkende steltlopers. Zo baltsen er Combatiente en broeden er volop Aguja Colinegra. Ook de Alondra Común is er altijd te horen. In het gebied broedt ook de Avetoro Común die zich vanaf maart laat horen.
Vanaf maart is het gebied zeer in trek voor doortrekkende steltlopers zoals Combatiente, Correlimos Común, Andarríos Grande, Andarríos Bastardo, Correlimos Menudo, Correlimos de Temminck, enz. De afgelopen jaren werden er ook de nodige zeldzaamheden gezien zoals Chorlito Dorado Siberiano, Correlimos Canelo, Archibebe Patigualdo Chico, Correlimos Falcinelo en vele anderen. In de late zomer tot en met de winter kunnen er grote aantallen Agachadiza común en Chorlito Dorado Europeo gezien worden en vanaf het najaar is het gebied zeer in trek bij diverse soorten ganzen en eenden.

De Marel Nature Center is located approximately in the middle of the island of Texel. Admission to De Marel is free and parking is also free. From the parking lot you can walk or cycle through the entire Waalenburg nature reserve. The area is accessible all year round on paths and roads. De Marel Nature Center is open all year round from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the Nature Center you will find a permanent exhibition with more than 150 stuffed birds and you will receive a lot of information about the birds you can find on Texel. You can also go here for a cup of coffee and something to eat.

Nederlands: Natuurcentrum De Marel ligt ongeveer in het midden van het eiland Texel. Toegang tot het Natuurcentrum is gratis en ook parkeren is er gratis. Vanaf de parkeerplaats kun je door het hele natuurgebied Waalenburg wandelen of fietsen. Het gebied is het gehele jaar toegankelijk op paden en wegen. Natuurcentrum de Marel is het gehele jaar van dinsdag tot en met zaterdag geopend van 10-17 uur en op zondag van 11-17 uur. In het Natuurcentrum De Marel vindt je een permanente expositie met meer dan 150 opgezette vogels en krijg je veel informatie over de vogels die je op Texel kan aantreffen. Ook kan hier er terecht voor een kop koffie en wat lekkers.
