The Quackjeswater is a varied dune area that consists of extensive dunes, wet dune valleys, marsh, quiet dune lakes and forest. You can walk all the way around the dune lake (3 km). You will pass a beautiful lookout point from where you have a view of the breeding colonies of Espátula Común, Cormorán Grande and Garceta Común. Quackjeswater was the first place in the Netherlands where Garceta Común started to breed. The best months to enjoy the breeding colonies are April and May. The Espátula Común can already have chicks from mid-April. You can observe the breeding colonies while hundreds of birds come in to build nests or feed their young. In good years there are almost 300 Espátula Común nests. Binoculars will do, but if you have a telescope it's definitely a plus on this lookout point. The viewpoint is only 300 m from the parkingplace, so you don't have to carry your telescope a long way.
The other parts of Quackjeswater are interesting too. Sometimes it feels like a primeval forest with the many big old and winding oaks. Because of the diversity in landscape and habitats the area has a huge variety of birds. Martín Pescador Común is often seen. Zampullín Común and Zampullín Cuellinegro breed here. Charrán Común and Charrán Patinegro hunt above the waters in summer. The forest around the dune lake is full of singing birds. From Curruca Capirotada and Camachuelo Común to Carbonero Montano and Mito Común. Pico Picapinos and Pito Real are regulars. In winter many species of ducks and geese can be seen on the dune lake.

Nederlands: Het Quackjeswater is een gevarieerd duingebied dat bestaat uit uitgestrekte duinen, natte duinvalleien, moeras, rustige duinmeren en bos. Je kunt helemaal rond het duinmeer lopen (3 km). Je passeert een prachtig uitkijkpunt vanwaar je uitzicht hebt op de broedkolonies van Espátula Común, Cormorán Grande en Garceta Común. Quackjeswater was de eerste plaats in Nederland waar Kleine Zilverreiger begon met broeden. De beste maanden om van de broedkolonies te genieten zijn april en mei. De Espátula Común kan vanaf half april al kuikens krijgen. Je kunt de broedkolonies observeren terwijl honderden vogels af en aan vliegen om nesten te bouwen of hun jongen te voeden. In goede jaren zijn er bijna 300 Espátula Común nesten. Een verrekijker is voldoende, maar als je een telescoop hebt, is dat zeker een pluspunt op dit uitkijkpunt. Het uitzichtpunt ligt op slechts 300 m van de parkeerplaats, dus je hoeft je telescoop niet ver te sjouwen.
Ook de andere delen van het Quackjeswater zijn interessant. Soms voelt het als een oerbos met de vele grote oude en kronkelende eiken. Door de diversiteit aan landschappen en habitats kent het gebied een grote verscheidenheid aan vogels. Martín Pescador Común wordt vaak gezien. Zampullín Común en Zampullín Cuellinegro broeden hier. Charrán Común en Charrán Patinegro jagen in de zomer boven de wateren. Het bos rond het duinmeer zit vol met zingende vogels. Van Curruca Capirotada en Camachuelo Común tot Carbonero Montano en Mito Común. Pico Picapinos en Pito Real zijn stamgasten. In de winter zijn op het duinmeer vele soorten eenden en ganzen te zien.

Otherwise: From Rockanje: The Schapengorsedijk in the direction of Hellevoetsluis, this dike changes into the Duindijk. 100 m before the tunnel under the Dammenweg (N57) turn right. Immediately after the 'loop' turn left to the parking lot. From Hellevoetsluis: When leaving Hellevoetsluis, the Amnesty Internationallaan turns into the Provincialeweg (N497) after the roundabout. At the first intersection, turn left onto Voorweg. After 60 m turn right onto Haringvlietweg. After 1.3 km turn left onto the exit. After 160 m turn right at the t-junction, through the tunnel under Dammenweg (N57). Turn left 100 m after the tunnel. Immediately after the 'loop' turn left to the parking lot. From Dammenweg (N57) (only car traffic): Turn to Provincialeweg (N497) in the direction of Hellevoetsluis. After 1.4 km turn right onto Voorweg. After 60 m turn right onto Haringvlietweg. After 1.3 km turn left onto the exit. After 160 m turn right at the t-junction, through the tunnel under Dammenweg (N57). Turn left 100 m after the tunnel. Immediately after the 'loop' turn left to the parking lot.
From the parking place you can walk make a nice circular walk around the lake (3 km, see the map). The trail is marked with red posts.

Anders: Vanuit Rockanje: De Schapengorsedijk richting Hellevoetsluis, deze dijk gaat over in de Duindijk. 100 m voor de tunnel onder de Dammenweg (N57) rechtsaf. Sla direct na de 'lus' linksaf naar de parkeerplaats. Vanuit Hellevoetsluis: Bij het verlaten van Hellevoetsluis gaat de Amnesty Internationallaan na de rotonde over in de Provincialeweg (N497). Sla bij de eerste kruising linksaf de Voorweg op. Sla na 60 m rechtsaf de Haringvlietweg op. Sla na 1,3 km linksaf de afrit op. Ga na 160 m op de t-splitsing rechtsaf, door de tunnel onder Dammenweg (N57). Sla 100 m na de tunnel linksaf. Sla direct na de 'lus' linksaf naar de parkeerplaats. Vanaf Dammenweg (N57) (alleen autoverkeer): Afslag Provincialeweg (N497) richting Hellevoetsluis. Ga na 1,4 km rechtsaf de Voorweg op. Sla na 60 m rechtsaf de Haringvlietweg op. Sla na 1,3 km linksaf de afrit op. Ga na 160 m op de t-splitsing rechtsaf, door de tunnel onder Dammenweg (N57). Sla 100 m na de tunnel linksaf. Sla direct na de 'lus' linksaf naar de parkeerplaats.
Vanaf de parkeerplaats kun je te voet een mooie rondwandeling maken om het meer (3 km, zie kaart). Het pad is gemarkeerd met rode palen.
