Outside the sea dyke at Holwerd is the dike for the ferry to the Waddens Sea island of Ameland. On both sides of this dike are salt marshes where beautiful bird species can be observed. On the east side, on the edge of the salt marsh, is a bird hide from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea. In the spring this is a place where you can mainly hear the sounds of the Avoceta Común, Gaviota Reidora and Charrán Común and in the autumn that of Zarapito Real and Ostrero Euroasiático. In winter there is a chance to spot Escribano Nival, Escribano Lapón, Pardillo Piquigualdo, Alondra Cornuda and Búho Campestre. Beautiful species such as Correlimos Oscuro and Serreta Mediana can also be seen on and from the ferry dam. With the 'Holwerd at Sea' project, an opening will be made in the sea dyke in the future, so that an even larger inner dyke bird sanctuary will be created.

Nederlands: Buiten de zeedijk bij Holwerd ligt de veerdijk voor de boot naar Ameland. Aan weerszijden van deze dijk bevinden kwelders waar prachtige vogelsoorten kunnen worden waargenomen. Aan de oostkant ligt aan de rand van de kwelder een vogelkijkhut waarvandaan prachtig de waddenzee kan worden bekeken. In het voorjaar is dit een plek waar vooral de geluiden van de Avoceta Común, Gaviota Reidora en Charrán Común zijn te horen en in het najaar dat van de Zarapito Real en de Ostrero Euroasiático. In de winter is hier kans om Escribano Nival, Escribano Lapón, Pardillo Piquigualdo, Alondra Cornuda en Búho Campestre waar te nemen. Op en vanaf de veerdam zijn tevens mooie soorten als de Correlimos Oscuro en Serreta Mediana te zien. Met het project 'Holwerd aan Zee' gaat in de toekomst een opening in de zeedijk gemaakt worden zodat er een groot binnendijks vogelreservaat ontstaat.

The dike can be reached by car or bicycle, after which the area can be explored on foot. The car can be parked halfway on the left side of the Veerdijk.
