Eagle-owl Valley - ENCI Quarry

The "oehoevallei", translated as "eagle-owl valley", is located on the northern side of the large ENCI Quarry, south of the city of Maastricht. This quarry is very rich in marlstone and the area is famous for its fossils, like Mosasaurus and many squid-like creatures. The quarry is also famous for its inhabitants. Since 1998, Búho Real breeds in the quarry and specifically in the small valley in the northern part of the quarry. Since 2010, this part of the quarry became a nature reserve, specifically to protect the breeding Búho Real. They removed most of the forested parts in the valley and a large viewing platform was installed for visitors to observe this magnificent species.

Viewed from off the platform, the valley consists of very steep walls and a small pond in the center of the valley. On the left (east), large excavation tunnels are visible. The male and female tend to hide near the entrances of the tunnels between the bushes and small trees, which makes it a harder place to observe them. On the right (west), a steep wall is located. Within this steep wall, a large hole is present in which the Búho Real breeds. You can observe them while they are on the edge of their nest, looking outside. When the young are bigger, probably at the end of the breeding season, they tend to leave the nest and "hide" themselves on the opposite steep wall of the viewing platform. Scan the walls and you'll find them. Another great view of the nest itself can be found on the eastern side of the area. From here, you can observe the nesting hole better and if young are present, they can be seen walking around from there.

The pond is a good spot for Zampullín Común. The scattered bushes and small trees in the valley are great for species like Curruca Zarcera, Curruca Zarcerilla and Carricero Políglota. Colirrojo Tizón can be heard singing too, its song echoing through the valley. Predatory birds tend to hang around the valley too, like Azor Común and Alcotán Europeo. Often, Búho Real react to the presence of these raptors, like looking at them or even scaring them off!

The valley is surrounded by forests and is also a good spot for many species of songbird and all five species of woodpecker are present, like Pico Mediano and Picamaderos Negro. The forests are home to many common species, like Curruca Capirotada and Mosquitero Común, but also to species like Papamoscas Cerrojillo, Papamoscas Gris and Colirrojo Real.

From off the viewing platform, you have a great view over the whole ENCI Quarry. This is ideal for observing raptors, like Abejero Europeo, Milano Real, Halcón Peregrino and Milano Negro.

Nederlands: Dit is een van de beste plekken in Nederland om de Búho Real te zien! De "oehoevallei" ligt aan de noordzijde van de grote ENCI-groeve, ten zuiden van de stad Maastricht. Deze mergelgroeve staat bekend om zijn fossielen, zoals Mosasaurus en vele inktvisachtige wezens. De groeve is ook beroemd om zijn inwoners. Sinds 1998 broedt de Búho Real in de groeve en met name in de kleine vallei in het noordelijke deel van de groeve. Sinds 2010 is dit deel van de groeve een natuurgebied geworden, specifiek ter bescherming van de Búho Real. Ze hebben daarvoor de meeste beboste delen in de vallei weggehaald en er werd een groot uitkijkplatform geïnstalleerd waar bezoekers deze prachtige soort kunnen observeren.

Vanaf het platform gezien, bestaat de vallei uit zeer steile wanden en een kleine vijver in het midden van de vallei. Links (oost) zijn grote opgravingstunnels zichtbaar. Het mannetje en het vrouwtje hebben de neiging zich te verstoppen bij de ingangen van de tunnels tussen de struiken en kleine bomen, waardoor het moeilijker is om ze te observeren. Aan de rechterkant (west) bevindt zich een steile wand. Binnen deze steile wand is een groot gat aanwezig waarin de Búho Real broedt. Je kunt ze observeren terwijl ze op de rand van hun nest naar buiten kijken. Als de jongen groter zijn, waarschijnlijk aan het einde van het broedseizoen, hebben ze de neiging het nest te verlaten en zich te "verstoppen" op de tegenoverliggende steile wand van het uitkijkplatform. Scan de muren en je zult ze vinden. Een ander geweldig uitzicht op het nest zelf is te vinden aan de oostkant van het gebied. Vanaf hier kun je het nestgat beter observeren en als er jongen aanwezig zijn, kun je ze vanaf daar zien rondlopen.

De vijver is een goede plek voor Zampullín Común. De verspreide struiken en kleine bomen in de vallei zijn geweldig voor soorten als Curruca Zarcera, Curruca Zarcerilla en Carricero Políglota. Colirrojo Tizón kun je luid horen zingen, zijn lied galmt door de vallei. Roofvogels hangen ook rond in de vallei, zoals Azor Común en Alcotán Europeo. Vaak reageren de oehoes op de aanwezigheid van deze roofvogels en jagen ze soms zelfs weg!

De vallei is omgeven door bossen en is ook een goede plek voor vele soorten zangvogels en alle vijf soorten spechten die in Nederland voorkomen, zoals Pico Mediano en Picamaderos Negro. De bossen herbergen veel voorkomende soorten, zoals Curruca Capirotada en Mosquitero Común, maar ook soorten als Papamoscas Cerrojillo, Papamoscas Gris en Colirrojo Real.

Vanaf het uitkijkplatform heb je een geweldig uitzicht over de hele ENCI-groeve. Dit is ideaal voor het observeren van roofvogels, zoals Abejero Europeo, Milano Real, Halcón Peregrino en Milano Negro.

The area can be easily accessed on foot and by bike. You can park your car at the Fort parkinglot (see map). From there, you'll have to climb a pretty steep road up towards the quarry. For invalids, there is a parkinglot on top of the hill so you won't have to climb the road.

Nederlands: Het gebied is gemakkelijk te voet en met de fiets te bereiken. Je kunt de auto parkeren op de parkeerplaats van Fort (zie de P op de plattegrond of klik op de P om direct een routebeschrijving te krijgen). Vanaf de parkeerplaats moet je een behoorlijk steile weg beklimmen naar de steengroeve. Voor invaliden is er een parkeerplaats bovenop de heuvel zodat de steile weg niet beklommen hoeft te worden.
