Because of the diversity in landscape, the species list of this area is high. Chotacabras Europeo, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo and good numbers of Tarabilla común breed here in summer. In the surrounding forests, Picamaderos Negro, Pico Mediano , Mosquitero Silbador, Herrerillo Capuchino and Piquitureto Común can be found. Cuervo Grande, Azor Común and Abejero Europeo also breed in this area.
Collalba Gris, Tarabilla Norteña and Mirlo Capiblanco are present in both Spring and Autumn migration. In autumn, migration is intensively followed from a fixed watchpoint. Hightlights include Escribano Hortelano, Bisbita Campestre and Cigüeña Negra, but as always during migration, anything can turn up. This is one of the places in the Netherlands to watch for migrating raptors, with good numbers of Milano Real, Busardo ratonero and Águila Pescadora and even the occassionaly rarer Eagle or Elanio Común. Alcaudón Norteño and Aguilucho pálido winter here. For the mammal lovers, the Maashorst is home to a herd of Wisent. Accompanied by singing Alondra Común, Escribano Cerillo and Codorniz Común if you're lucky, a visit to De Maashorst is always satisfying.

Nederlands: De Maashorst is interessante natuurgebied met een grote biodiversiteit. Grasland, weiland, omgeven door gevarieerde bossen en een paar vennen. Door de diversiteit in landschap is de soortenlijst van dit gebied hoog. Chotacabras Europeo, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo en een flink aantal Tarabilla común broeden hier in de zomer. In de omliggende bossen zijn Picamaderos Negro, Pico Mediano, Mosquitero Silbador, Herrerillo Capuchino en Piquitureto Común te vinden. Cuervo Grande, Azor Común en Abejero Europeo broeden ook in dit gebied.
Collalba Gris, Tarabilla Norteña en Mirlo Capiblanco zijn aanwezig in zowel de lente als de najaarstrek. In de herfst wordt de migratie intensief gevolgd vanuit een vast observatiepunt. Hoogtepunten van vogels die op doortrek zijn gezien zijn onder meer Escribano Hortelano, Bisbita Campestre en Cigüeña Negra, maar zoals altijd tijdens de vogeltrek kan er van alles opduiken. Dit is een van de plekken in Nederland om uit te kijken naar migrerende roofvogels, met een flink aantal Milano Real, Busardo ratonero en Águila Pescadora en zelfs de incidenteel zeldzamere roofvogel of Elanio Común. Alcaudón Norteño en Aguilucho pálido overwinteren hier. Voor de zoogdierliefhebbers is de Maashorst de thuisbasis van een kudde wisent (Europese bison). Begeleid door het zingen van Alondra Común, Escribano Cerillo en Codorniz Común als je geluk hebt, is een bezoek aan De Maashorst altijd bevredigend.

There are several free parking places around the area. The villages of Zeeland, Uden, Nistelrode and Schaijk all give access to De Maashorst. You can explore De Maashorst best on foot or by cycling. There are several marked routes leaving from the information centre. There also is a marked network that allows for planning your own walking route. The route that is displayed on the map is about 12 km.
There is a information centre at Erenakkerstraat 5, 5388 SZ, Nistelrode where coffee and cake is served. This a great starting point for a walk or even a cycle tour. (You need to bring your own bikes). There is a paved circular wheelchair route in the woods. With a short detour, a visit to the Wisent herd and some nice views over the open grassland in de midst of the area, are also possible for the wheelchair bound visitors.

Nederlands: Er zijn diverse gratis parkeerplaatsen in de buurt. De dorpen Zeeland, Uden, Nistelrode en Schaijk geven allemaal toegang tot De Maashorst. Je kunt De Maashorst het beste te voet of met de fiets verkennen. Er vertrekken verschillende gemarkeerde routes vanaf het informatiecentrum. Er is ook een gemarkeerd netwerk waarmee je zelf wandelroutes kunt plannen. De route die op de kaart wordt weergegeven is ongeveer 12 km.
Er is een informatiecentrum aan de Erenakkerstraat 5, 5388 SZ, Nistelrode waar koffie en gebak wordt geserveerd. Dit is een prima startpunt voor een wandeling of een fietstocht. (Je moet wel zelf fietsen meenemen). In het bos loopt een verharde ronde rolstoelroute. Met een korte omweg is een bezoek aan de Wisent-kudde en een aantal mooie uitzichten over het open grasland midden in het gebied ook voor rolstoelgebonden bezoekers mogelijk.
