The Borkeld nature reserve consists of forest, large heathlands, clay pits, fields, grasslands and a piece of raised bog in the central part. The Borkeld also has a large area with juniper. The terrain is undulating. The highest peak of the Friezenberg is at 40 meters. The water level can vary greatly, causing the rasised bog to sometimes dry out completely. In wet periods, a colony of Gaviota Reidora usually breeds in the area. During the bird migration period, the area is also visited by various species of wading birds. In winter, a Alcaudón Norteño is often a guest.
Breeding birds in the Borkeld include: Zarapito Real, Avefría Europea, Gavilán Común, Azor Común, Picamaderos Negro, Chotacabras Europeo, Alondra Totovía, Alondra Común, Bisbita Arbóreo, Colirrojo Real, Papamoscas Cerrojillo, Zorzal Charlo, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo, Camachuelo Común and Escribano Cerillo.

Nederlands: Natuurgebied de Borkeld is ca. 600 hectare groot en bestaat uit bos, grote heidevelden, leemkuilen, akkers, graslanden en een stukje hoogveen in het centrale deel. De Borkeld heeft ook het grootste jeneverbesstruweel van Nederland. Het terrein is glooiend. De hoogste top van de Friezenberg ligt op 40 meter. De waterstand kan sterk variëren waardoor het veen soms geheel droog staat. In natte tijden ontstaat er meestal een kolonie Gaviota Reidora. Tijdens de vogeltrektijd wordt het gebied tevens bezocht door verschillende soorten steltlopers. In de winter is er vaak een Alcaudón Norteño te gast.
Broedvogels in de Borkeld zijn onder meer: Zarapito Real, Avefría Europea, Gavilán Común, Azor Común, Picamaderos Negro, Chotacabras Europeo, Alondra Totovía, Alondra Común, Bisbita Arbóreo, Colirrojo Real, Papamoscas Cerrojillo, Zorzal Charlo, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo, Camachuelo Común en Escribano Cerillo.

De Borkeld is located between the towns of Markelo and Rijssen, south of the A1 motorway. You can park at the day camping site De Borkeld with a parking lot on the west side of the area. Press the P on the map for directions to the parking lot. There are various marked walks of 1, 3 and 5 km. The circular walk shown on the map is approximately 8 km. Wear waterproof footwear during wet periods

Nederlands: De Borkeld ligt tussen Markelo en Rijssen, ten zuiden van de snelweg A1. Je kunt parkeren bij de dagkampeerterrein De Borkeld met parkeerplaats aan de westzijde van het gebied. Druk op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats. Er zijn verschillende gemarkeerde wandelingen uitgezet van 1, 3 en 5 km.
