Oasi dei Variconi includes freshwater ponds surrounded by marshes and a saline lagoon. It belongs to the last remaining portion of a formerly vast complex of swamps which was drained between the 17th and 18th centuries. Oasi dei Variconi is a great place to observe water birds and passerines and has bird hides and observation points. Many bird species use the site as migration stopover or for wintering, including protected species such as Flamenco Común, Correlimos Gordo and Porrón Pardo.
