The volcanic island of Ustica occupies an area of almost 9 km2 with a circumference of 12 km and has high and steep coasts that are marked by fissures and cavities. Riserva Naturale Orientata Isola di Ustica is a protected area on the island of Ustica and the north-western coast of the island is the heart of the protected marine reserve of Ustica, which extends all around the island coasts.. The island sees a lot of migratory birds in autumn and spring. The species of birds known for Ustica are over 170, including 18 species of birds of prey.
Located on the top of Mount Falconiera, about 160 meters above the sea, is an observation point. Ustica is interesting for migration of birds of prey mainly during spring. The commonest species observed is Abejero Europeo of which about one thousand individuals are counted annually, followed the Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental and Milano Negro. Apart from the species of birds of prey that are seen regularly, also other soaring species such as the Cigüeña Blanca and Cigüeña Negra can be observed. Furthermore, the migration of the Abejaruco Europeo is interesting with some thousand individuals.

Riserva Naturale Orientata Isola di Ustica è un'area protetta dell'isola di Ustica. Situato sulla sommità del monte Falconiera, a circa 160 metri sul livello del mare, è un punto di osservazione sia. Ustica è interessata alla migrazione dei rapaci durante la primavera. La specie più comune osservata è Abejero Europeo di cui si contano circa mille individui all'anno, seguita dal Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental e Milano Negro. Oltre alle specie di rapaci che si vedono regolarmente, si possono osservare anche altre specie in volo come il Cigüeña Blanca e Cigüeña Negra. Inoltre, la migrazione del Abejaruco Europeo è interessante con qualche migliaio di individui.

Ustica is connected to Sicily by slow ferries and fast ferries leaving daily from Palermo. The slow ferry is more scenic but the fast ferry is much quicker. Ferry timetables vary hugely throughout the seasons, changing frequently. Siremar run slow ferry services (3 hours) and Liberty Lines operate fast ferry (1,5 hours). For much of the year you're likely to have a choice of at least two or three departure times daily. See the links to the ferry companies below.
There's a choice of hotels, B&Bs and rooms to let on Ustica. A convenient place to stay is the little town of Ustica itself, close to the port. There are several walking trails ro explore the island. On foot, the path around the island takes 5–6 hours.
