An extremely accessible wetland, surrounded by two lakes, many different spruce woods, and some alpine peaks full of nature.
If you happen to spend your summer holidays in the town of Trento, you will notice how hot the temperature is even though you are surrounded by the Alps. If you want to combine a birding experience with a refreshing bath in cold and calm waters, then Pinè is the right place for you. Two lakes, one artificial and one natural, are located on the Pinè plateau, to which a third small basin rich in reeds must be added. The main naturalistic spot in terms of fauna linked to water is certainly represented by the Serraia lake. The biotope "Paludi di Sternigo" (literally translatable as "Sternigo's Marshes) extends on the shorter bank of the latter. This is a very interesting hotspot given the presence of a thick reed bed for different species of anatidae, podicipeds and Acrocephalids.
Although it is not the best place in Trentino for birdwatching in wetlands (an average altitude of 974 meters above sea level must be taken into account), it offers often incredibly photographic opportunities, in the majority of the cases better than many other places, more famous in this region. Just to give you an example, the Somormujo Lavanco nests just two meters away from the sidewalk and you can have a glimpse of its private life just walking by! The two big lakes are obviously the best place in order to spot waterfowl but, if you have the time, I Suggest you to visit also the Laghestel which is the third basin. This place is extremely rich in reeds and it has a Bird observation tower. In this conditions Carbonero Palustre Carricero Común Carricero Tordal Rascón Europeo are some beautiful yet great encounters (Usually for this elevation even a Ánade azulón is something strange).
You can easily park the car in the parkings that are all over the two lakes. in order to get yourself to the Pinè plateau you can follow three different routes but I suggest you to follow the road that goes up from (Civezzano-La Mochena) because its larger and faster. Once you are there, pay attention to the speed cameras, they are everywhere and the speed limit is very strict. Click on a P in the map to get directions to that point.
