Descripción
Grunnafjörður's fertile soil, together with other biological factors, makes the area an eminently suitable habitat for plants and animals. The fjord is the only Ramsar area in Iceland that borders the sea. The size of the area is approximately 1,470 hectares. The fjord is important for many species of birds. The area is internationally important for Barnacla Carinegra, Correlimos Gordo and Correlimos Tridáctilo. About 25% of the Barnacla Carinegra population stops in Grunnafjörður on their journeys from mainland Europe to the Arctic in both spring and autumn and about 1% of the Correlimos Gordo population. Many waterfowl, such as Correlimos Oscuro, Correlimos Común, Chorlitejo Grande and Ostrero Euroasiático depend on the mudflats for their survival.
