Mekszikópuszta is located in the Fertő-Hanság National Park in North-West Hungary at the south-eastern edge of Lake Neusiedl (HU: Fertő tó). Though relatively small, it comprises a variety of landscapes from lake shore and reed belts to the typical Hungarian puszta (Pannonian steppes). The birds you can encounter here include several species of geese and ducks e.g., Ánsar común, Cerceta Carretona, Cuchara Común, Pato Colorado, Porrón Pardo; waders such as Combatiente, Cigüeñuela común, Avoceta Común, Archibebe Claro, Archibebe Común, Archibebe Oscuro, Chorlitejo Chico, Zarapito Real, Aguja Colinegra; reed warblers; herons; raptors including Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental, Pigargo Europeo, Alcotán Europeo, Halcón Peregrino; Abejaruco Europeo, Abubilla común, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo and Lavandera Boyera are regularly seen in spring and summer and occasionally Tarabilla Norteña and Tarabilla común can be spotted. Vuelvepiedras Común, Correlimos Gordo and Correlimos Tridáctilo are among rarities that can be encountered in autumn.

It takes about 2,5 hours by car from Budapest but it is merely a 40 min drive from the birdingplaces in neighbouring Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Austria.

The southern part of the route follows a path along a small channel and contains 2 small lookout platforms. Another platform is located next to the 8521 road. Unfortunately there is no footpath along the road but usually there is not much traffic so it is safe to walk or ride a bike.
