Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Golondrina Común roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Archibebe Claro, Andarríos Bastardo, Agachadiza común, Andarríos Chico, Andarríos Grande, Martín Pescador Común, Vencejo Real, Garceta Común, Gaviota Patiamarilla, Jilguero Europeo, Gorrión Italiano and Cetia Ruiseñor.
